What is Menopause?
Menopause is the time in a woman’s life when her periods stop and her ovaries lose their reproductive function (Source: Women’s Health Concern.)
You are post-menopausal when it is 1 year after your last period if you are aged over 50 years, or 2 years after your last period if you are aged under 50.
Peri-menopause means “around the menopause” and refers to the time during which your body makes the natural transition to menopause. (Source: Mayo Clinic)
Symptoms of menopause and peri-menopause can include, but are not limited to:
Hot Flushes
Night Sweats
Sleep Disturbance
Vaginal Symptoms such as vaginal dryness or discomfort during sex
Urinary Symptoms- recurrent UTIs (urinary tract infections) or incontinence
Mood disturbance or issues with concentration

Every woman is different and our doctors will work with you to highlight and treat the specific issues which are bothering you.

Menopause can affect every woman differently- here are some of the treatments which our Doctors can prescribe and advise on.

There are many different forms of HRT (tablets, gels, patches) and different strengths are available.
Your Doctor will advise you on what exact type would suit you
They will also discuss if HRT is clinically indicated and advise on the pros & cons of HRT.
Anti-depressants
Can be used to treat some vasomotor symptoms, for example hot flushes
Can be used in women with anxiety, depression and other emotional issues.
HRT Alternatives
HRT is not for everyone. Our Doctors are happy to discuss some alternatives and give general life advice also.

We will take a detailed history, including discussing your symptoms, using our Menopause Symptom Checker. We will ask you about your previous medical history, current medications and general health.
You will be invited to attend for a Blood Pressure and BMI check.
If necessary, we will also take Blood Tests. Unfortunately, there is no particular test which can “prove” that you are menopausal, as it is a clinical diagnosis. However, your doctor may order routine blood tests, which will be discussed with you.
If necessary, you may need a Breast Check or Cervical Smear. Your Bone Health and Heart Health will also be discussed.
Once your results are available, you will be offered a follow up consultation with one of our Doctors.
The Doctor will discuss if HRT or other medications would be advised. They will also give specific lifestyle advice.
The cost for your detailed Menopause Consultation is €150. This includes history, examination, blood tests and prescription. You can also avail of a follow up consultation in 3-6 months to assess how you are getting on.
